As for the component-to-VGA setup, I use that because my monitor doesn't have any component-in feeds (nor HDMI for that matter, though other makes fo this monitor do). The image quality is as good as any VGA feed, ie. not quite as good as DVI, but still worlds ahead of the best analog video standards like S-Video. It renders just fine without any significant upscaling issues on my 1920x1200 36" monitor.
