It is different in other fields. Mostly because those other fields aren't profitable. Those grants mostly go for stuff like biofuel research... stuff that's seen as too costly with little reward for private sectors.
Medical field though... that's almost all private.
Outside of earmarks and such, which are rapidly being cut down on.
