If you don't want to play it like a shooter, choose a different starting class than Soldier. Biotics are particularly fun to play (Singularity is a blast), but I found that playing as an Engineer was the most strategic -- you would have to pause the battle and assign actions for every enemy you encountered if you wanted to survive on the higher difficulty levels. However, you never felt gimped... engineers have amazing abilities and playing one was -- to me -- more fun than playing as a soldier.

Totally Agree.  If you don't like the whole idea of aiming guns, play a Biotics class such as Adept.  Biotics are only aimed when the game is paused, taking the element of 'real time shooter' out of the game.

Your NPC squad mates can take care of all the shooting for you once you trap your foe in a 'singularity' or something.

Also, as you progress, the FPS element of the game definitly gets easier.  I think this is what frustrates some FPS fans in the begining.  Until you increase your skill, it is tough to aim and you move slow.

 Examples:

Movement: As you increase your armor skill and use armor upgrades, you begin to move a lot faster (depending on the armor type you are wearing).

Shooting: I've heard it said that a weapon such as the sniper rifle is "useless".  It is, unless you are trained.  My character is now max'd in sniper skill.  I can kill most targets in one shot, and with a stablizer attachment the gun site rarely moves when I aim.  I've also  noticed now that even if my site is slightly off my mark I still hit my target, meaning that my character is actually a BETER shot than I am.

As others have said, although you do aim the guns yourself, the RPG element really dictates how well things will work.
