If you don't want to play it like a shooter, choose a different starting class than Soldier. Biotics are particularly fun to play (Singularity is a blast), but I found that playing as an Engineer was the most strategic -- you would have to pause the battle and assign actions for every enemy you encountered if you wanted to survive on the higher difficulty levels. However, you never felt gimped... engineers have amazing abilities and playing one was -- to me -- more fun than playing as a soldier.
