This book talks about sex, violence, death, and selfishness. I can't see how Disney could possibly make it family-friendly and stay true to the book.

No, they didn't. They didn't revolve around any of those. Selfishness maybe, but those people were given a good lecture and regretted their behavior.

His entire motivation as a villain revolves around lust for Esmeralda.
