it's generally acknowledged that they changed (read: lightened) their standards right around the turn of the century. So scores for later consoles will generally be higher (unfortunately, not for the Wii).

Well, that's not entirely true.  If we go by perfect Famitsu scores (40/40)...

  1. Wii (4 games)
  2. DS (2 games)
  3. N64, DC, PS1, GC, PS2, PS3, 360 (1 game each)

The only thing the OP took into consideration was the overall average of Famitsu scores. Do they determine "best library ever?" Hardly.

Two problems that I already brought up: one, this is Famitsu. Famitsu has scored a lot more leniently since the 2000s. They used to have the reputation of doling out some of the most critical scores. Not now.

Two: averages. The Wii has the largest installed user base and as a result, draws the most low budget, rushed titles to the platform, same as the PS2 last generation. Four perfect scores for the Wii neither cancel out a boatload of 4 and 5 average scores, nor do they make up a "best library ever" unless you only buy 4 games per cycle or something similarly ridiculous.

Overall average for the Wii was still around 19% due to all the low scoring titles that hopefully not many people actually bought.

The numbers for the PS3 are probably a better reflection of the library having fewer average killing clunker scores than anything else. Given the lower installed user base and greater costs associated with development, this shouldn't come as a surprise.
