If you're just having fun with your kid, then yeah reviews are irrelevant.

If you're looking for a great game that will be well made, challenging/rewarding, great story, etc. then you should probably listen to reviews to at least some extent.

Like if a game gets a 40 on metacritic you know its not worth your time but if it gets a 70 on meta it could still be good so its up to you.

Where does 58 on Metacritic come into it? Because Wii Play got a 58, and considering it's a $10 game, was one of my best purchases of the generation

It really depends what you're looking for. If you just want some good old fashioned fun then go for it.

Personally I hate reviews for most things like movies for example. Critics and I don't agree on what is a good/bad movie. But games on the other hand I don't think the review system is as bad as people say it is. Find a reviewer(s) you like and ignore the others.
