in terms of copyright protection it isnt one.
for us gamers it looks and works the same, if u want to u could call it a copy.
for tech savvy people it isnt a copy, functions are different with a similiar design.
its just the normal way of business, you orient towards the market leader and add your own ideas. or bring up something totally new.
the research part, i couldnt care less. sony also did some research together with a company specialized in 3d cameras. guess what? thats the company MS bought and now is using for Natal.
