Since it seems that you're early in the game, you shouldn't yet worry about setting up roles for your characters (except maybe Hope and Vanille, because their roles are exclusively magic influenced).

When you get control of your entire party, plan accordingly to the strengths and weaknesses of all of them. For example, most people like to use Hope, because of his SYN skills, while I rather use Vanille due to her SAB skills, which coupled with Fang's SAB skills, can instantly debuff any enemy.

It all boils down to how you want to play the game later ;)

Cheers andf if I get stuck or have any other questions I know who to ask now I love how this game makes you think and have to use strategies rather than just pushing the same buttons over and over to defeat enemies its great possibly my favorite game of the year so far!
