You know, now that I think about it, what the hell was Pong?  Puzzle?  Sport?  JRPG?  I  guess it was never simple.

Its a shooter. Those round things flying around are obviously bullets of some kind.

Nahhh, it was an obvious Simulator. You simulated some flying round thingy hitting a long stick thingy. It doesn't get more real than that
