I doubt Microsoft will cave in to Sony on the whole Blu-ray issue.

Also, I don't think Sony will allow Microsoft to use blu-ray, and if they did, I'd expect sony would get a cut.

blu-ray will be superceded by the time the next gen comes around anyway.

the red part is where you fail.

I agree, especially as a Win Mobile 7 Sony phone will allow you to log into both Live and PSN, but probably not at the same time. Oh and it won't be of much benefit as Microsoft can gain the use of HD-DVD quite cheaply if they wanted to, Sony doesn't have the monopoly on high density disc formats and thats ignoring the fact that they control less than 1/3rd of Blu Ray so making dicks of themselves over discs wouldn't be in their best interest.

Sony don't HAVE to be dicks about it, but they can if they want to, they were founding members of the Blu-ray Disc Association and I'm sure they carry a lot of weight there (considering blu-ray wouldn't of succeded without Sony).  And i think Microsoft would grudge paying a fraction of every games profits to Sony (no matter how small).

There are plenty other easier/better options open to Microsoft.  They don't HAVE to use blu-ray so I can't see them doing so.

It does not work that way, Sony could not deny Microsoft anyway yes sony was one of the founder's of the first BluRay founder's which later became the BDA, but also Even though Sony has been developing Blu-Ray since 1992 Sony was not the only one who has worked on Blu-Ray just like CD format and the DVD format Many companies were in it for creating these disc based format's Sony was only one of these companies, and besides they would not do it anyway because it mean's more Blu-ray devices in the market, thus more BLUE LASER DIODE'S to be sold.

the only thing it would be is a little bit of Microsoft's pride having to support Java over Microsoft's own IHD.

which is why Most likely Microsoft would never support Blu-Ray over the fact that BDA choose the java format for control software over IHD.

which made Microsoft turn away from Blu-Ray in the first place.

Fair enough, good points, I doubt Sony could/would actually stop MS from using Blu-ray, but wouldn't MS still have to pay Sony a small amout for every game sold? (I really don't know this, do they?)

This and the fact that MS backed the wrong horse during the blu-ray/HD-DVD race, would surely put MS off using the blu-ray media, when there are plenty of other options available.

And I don't know enough about the java/IHD issue to comment, but I suppose that would be a deterent too.

@DirtyP2002 I'm unsure if those are valid points about the programs, besides the fact that they're a pretty small fragments of blu ray as a whole, The VC-1 codec sales and distribution is hanlded by Sonic solutions, so It's unclear if MS gets any money from the use of the codec.  And you also forgot to mention that Sony is also a member of the AACS LA.

yea but it seems that you hink these two companies are enemies or have never worked together.Sony pays money to MS on every Vaio sold.they do alot of partnership together since one is a hardware company and one is a software company.

ot:

if MS wants  the next box not to be out of date with the market and be able to play HD movies off a physicaal disk(as most gamers are disk collectors aswell),then they don't have much choice.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from.  I know MS makes money everytime anyone sells a PC with windows. Is there much choice involved there though?  Sony needs windows on the viao, and I dont' think MS is allowed to refuse the sell it to them.

MS has plenty other choices available to them other than blu-ray, why use it if they don't have to?

And I'm pretty sure there's some rivalry going on between Sony and MS, they're always making digs at each other.
