When has there ever been two consoles?

Generation 4 had Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Turbo Graphix and Neo Geo.

Generation 5 had Jaguar, Nintendo 64, Playstation and Sega Saturn as well as 6 or 7 lesser names consoles (Apple's "craptastic" Pippin).

This is the first generation with less than 4 consoles.

I would love to see more developers join the console wars again. It's been Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft for too long!

Using your example, we have more than 3 consoles this gen as well.  They're just focused in limited markets (such as Japan or Brazil) or such as the PS2 which is STILL alive.

However, when someone says there was only '2 consoles' in the past, they were probably talking about 2 major consoles.  Specifically the NES and Sega Master System along with the SNES and Sega Genesis.

In reality, while stuff like Turbo Graphix and Neo Geo existed, they didn't even make a dent in the market Sega and Nintendo held.

Even though PS2 is still selling that doesn't mean it's part of this generation. It's still a sixth generation console, and besides the 3 main consoles there have been nothing released by serious developers. Nintendo and Sony clones like the Polystation and MiWi don't count.

Saying Turbo Graphix doesn't count but sega master system does is silly since sega master system only sold 13 million while the Turbox Graphix sold 10 million.

The Turbo-Graphix may have sold that many systems, but they were always playing catch up to the 'big two' in software.  There was a reason the Turbo-Graphix was trying to directly compete with Sega.  Its not unlike the PS3/XBOX360 rivalry of today.  After a while, both Sega and the Turbo Graphix realized they were trying to appeal to a different market than Nintendo.  And their 'what Nintendon't/We're the strongest console graphically' ads weren't working to make them #1.  So they were fighting for the #2 spot.  And unfortunately for the Turbo-graphix, its major market was Japan.
