Using your example, we have more than 3 consoles this gen as well. They're just focused in limited markets (such as Japan or Brazil) or such as the PS2 which is STILL alive. However, when someone says there was only '2 consoles' in the past, they were probably talking about 2 major consoles. Specifically the NES and Sega Master System along with the SNES and Sega Genesis. In reality, while stuff like Turbo Graphix and Neo Geo existed, they didn't even make a dent in the market Sega and Nintendo held. |
Even though PS2 is still selling that doesn't mean it's part of this generation. It's still a sixth generation console, and besides the 3 main consoles there have been nothing released by serious developers. Nintendo and Sony clones like the Polystation and MiWi don't count.
Saying Turbo Graphix doesn't count but sega master system does is silly since sega master system only sold 13 million while the Turbox Graphix sold 10 million.
This is only my opinion.
