I'd much rather see it drop back down to 2. 2 is a good number.
The best type of split is that old genesis SNES split. You know where the older people went to the more hardcore Sega, the casual younger people went to the SNES which censored games like Mortal Kombat 2 so their parents wouldn't get upset. It was perfect.
Ditto for the late gen split between the N64 and the PS1 (once Saturn more or less died off).
Two is a good number of consoles, one casual and cheap (where Nintendo is best such as the Gamecube, N64, Wii. Uses old technology and revamps classic properties) and one adult and more expensive (where Sony is best with games like Heavy Rain, God of War, Gran Turismo etc).
I really have no idea why Microsoft is in it other then Microsoft wants to be in it and has money to burn. They have neither the cheap classic appeal of the Wii nor the cutting edge tech appeal of Sony. They are just kind of the turd in the punch bowl really that just creates needless competition without making anything better.
At least when it was Nintendo vs Sega vs Sony (where Sony and Sega both went after the adult market) Sega had classic quality games on the Saturn and Dreamcast to justify their position. I would argue that Sonic Adventure alone (when it was released, not by todays standards obviously) was better then anything I've seen from Microsoft over the entire life of the 360. Ditto for Panzar Dragoon.
