Actually, most of the popular JRPG series have sparked as much or bigger interest than last gen. FF, KH and DQ.
If you take a look at other JRPG series in the prior generation, you'll see that there isn't much difference in numbers. Persona 4, one of the best JRPG's in PS2 hasn't even touched 1 M sales.
JRPG never was a genre that sold millions, outside a few select series. Plus, this gen the main JRPG focus was shifted to Handhelds, because on consoles, they came out a little too few, too late.
