One thing not considered in the discussions:

Mass Effect is one of the most tied-together stories in the history of gaming. Because of that, I would think there may be an upper limit as to how well it can perform. Lord of the Rings did the same thing - ROTK didn't make a huge amount more money than FOTR did.

After all, why would you buy ME2 if you have not purchased ME1, new or used? That is something to consider.

Having said that, I would imagine that ME1 got a great boost when ME2 came out, and ME2 will get a great boost when ME3 comes out.
