The one thing that I think they lived up to, and exceeded imo, is the focus on the central story. Everything after Mass Effect that BioWare has done kinda feels like games about collecting party members. In ME2 and Dragon Age, the whole game is pretty much just collecting members and delving into their backgrounds and motivations. Once you've gotten your party, the game is about to end within an hour. The actual plot on the back of the box only comes up once every blue moon. Also, they've moved away from having a central bad guy that you can point at and say, "this guy is the boss." In dragon age it was a demon who was in the game for like 5 seconds of cutscenes and didn't show up until the very last battle. ME2 did something similar as well. The one thing I like about this expansion is that it feels like it's very focused on the story and there is a central bad guy and he gets screen time and he's an actual character that's getting fleshed out and he has an actual story arc. |
I think it's because they spread out the characters a bit more and gave them personal quests (like Loyalty quests in ME2) whereas in games like KoTOR you gathered you party in the first third of the game. Simply having more interaction with your party members doesn't negate whatever it is you are questing for (because people wouldn't shut up about grey wardens, blights and darkspawn in DA)
