In terms of performance, BMW typically dominates any comparison. The weight penalty that comes with AWD far outweighs any gains in terms of traction. Plus, Audi always dials in a healthy amount of understeer because they realize the majority of drivers are idiots. MB cars just weigh too much to ever really compete.
I just read a comparison in Motortrend with the BMW 5 series and the MB E class. Guess who won?
Of course, there are other reasons to buy a car besides performance, so a BMW won't always be the answer. For a gearhead like myself, though, BMW will always top the other two.
