Gmail was "in beta" for like 4 years or something so that doesn't mean much. Since it's available for free with no limitations I'd say calling it a beta is just arguing semantics. If people have tried it and not liked it how many times can you expect them to check back in to see what's changed? If the core concept doesn't appeal to the person it's unlikely that a shinier, faster loading home would make any sort of difference.
