Halo 1 to Halo 2 then to Halo 3 sure seems to buck the trend... Hmmm....

They weren't sitting in the same position as Halo 3 / Halo Reach sit currently.   Halo 1 was a new IP.  Halo 2 was the sequel to this popular new IP.   Halo 3 was the first HD entry, sequel to a popular pre-existing series.

Microsoft was a growing brand comparatively to the previous generations entries when Halo 3 released. This has stagnated at this point a bit.   By now, people who want a 360 for the awesomeness that is Halo....Own one and own Halo 3 / ODST or whatever else they desire.

Not true.  I have at least 10+ friends in real life that I could name off who love Halo but don't have a 360 yet.  Most are just waiting for a cheaper price.

And yet each consecutive Halo FPS sold more than its predecesor.  So clearly not many people were dissappointed and each time more people were intrigued into buying the game.  The only complaints that were ever made about Halo 3 are now being addressed in Halo Reach so that in turn would draw in even more non Halo fans (new graphics, new gameplay elements, new game modes, sprinting, etc).

The Xbox was a new console, with no fanbase and no really quality games.  Then Halo arrived.  Forged a fanbase of MS fans and the rest is history.   I loved Halo 1, Hated Halo 2.  Liked 3 a little more than 2 but it was pretty much more of the same.

Halo 1 was a launch title.  So that kind of obliterates this point

I'm sure Halo Reach will be their most technically advanced Halo yet.  That doesn't mean squat in terms of sales otherwise the Wii wouldn't be the best selling console.

What you're failing to realize is new graphics, new gameplay elements, etc are all well and good but also there will be people out there that dislike that direction just as much as some people will love it.

This is true but it is highly more likely that more new people will like it than dislike it.

Oh really?  It seemed like for the RTS genre Halo Wars received overwhelming praise and higher meta scores than any console RTS to date.

Really?  How many console RTS's have even been released?  That's like saying you won a contest but there was only one contestant.

Red Alert 3, Command and Conquer 3, Supreme Commander, Toy Soldiers, Halo Wars, Tom Clancy's EndWar, Tropico 3, Universe At War, Star Trek Legacy, and I'm sure there are plenty more, that was just the ones I found in the first 500+ games on 360.

Halo ODST was merely something to satisfy the most hardcore halo fans until Reach could be completed and was mostly to keep Reach under the radar for a while longer.  The only real complaint about ODST was it lacked much new since it was merely a new short campaign and a new game mode.  Nothing relating to Halo itself has been wrong with any of the Halo games of 2009.  Quite frankly it is NOT common knowledge that the Halo brand is at a low point.  In fact that is only common amongst people who are not Halo fans

Halo has taken a franchise hit in terms of critical acclaim.  Over-saturation of the name isn't always a good thing.  The last entries of Halo in the minds of the fanbase are ODST / Halo Wars.

We'll talk about oversaturation when Halo has reached its 7th+ game and has spanned to multiple consoles/handhelds (Like Mario, Metal Gear, Zelda, etc)
