Yeah, Sony's R&D saw it coming. It's just that the people who actually call the shots at SCE didn't see the light until sometime around 2007/2008.

Dabbling with new interfaces in R&D and occaisionally punting one out as an add-on isn't anything new, but adopting them as a core focus of the platform is rare, because that's where the real risk is. The money men at Sony and MS weren't willing to take that risk until somebody else took the chance and proved it could work.

So it took them 2 years to show games that are still ONLY 20% complete? Yea, theyre certaintly dedicated.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
