it's because it was VAC detectable, they can't restrict people running unofficial servers from gaining achievements, so they changed it to random, valve is a good company because of that but if you've ever noticed, unofficial server time, stats, kills, etc etc usually don't get updated into your profile even if you have gained the achievements, the change was to counter those kinds of servers, so yeah, in the grand scheme of things, it's cheating the system, or rather, was.

You do know that since they track servers and achievements they can easily track achievements gained in unofficial servers right?

Unless you want them to turn into EA.net, IW.net, or Battle.net and have full control of your actions, which you are obviously against. That's why I said Valve is a good company because of that, but that doesn't mean that abusing the system is the right thing to do, it's where your morales are when it obviously wasn't intended by design.

I rightfully agree, though I haven't seen so many problems with Battle.net either. Anyhow, when the system is bullshit, you find ways around it. In Valve's own philosophy, the fact achievement servers exist shows that there's a huge demand for not having to put up with the system. They chose not to fight the demand, and they are very smart for it.

They've perma banned so many battle.net accounts that it's funny, and now they are linking all Blizzard products to it, I just hope a ban from one game doesn't mean your entire battle.net is fucked, that, would suck, just imagen all your WoW, SC2, and D3 shit all going away at once due to misunderstanding(people not cheaint but getting hammered playing at internet cafes.) Valve knows to not piss off it's customers too bad, I still don't know wtf L4D2 was about nor am I going to ever buy it unless it's like 5 bucks, but other than that, Valve is a very cool company, so far.
