That's because Tolkein is a terrible writer.  Good storyteller, terrible writer.

I kinda agree. His style is just...too slow and too silly sometimes (granted, the books were made in late 1800s-early 1900s I think?) but he can tell a good story (at least for LotR, Hobbit had a terrible one) though it's hampered bywriting. I only read the third LotR but damn is it slow. The movies are incredible, at least.

lol, no, early 40's I think.  The reason he writes the way he does because he's a big history person so he gets bogged down in those details.  So he makes a really cool convincing world and the story itself is good but it's just the writing that's off.
