In Japan it is still helpful for the PSP. Look at PSP sales in Japan vs other countries. The PSP would be literally dead in the water if it weren't for Japan.
While the PS3 lags behind the Wii, it has helped the 360 and PS3 gap shrink even further. As others stated the PS3 would not come close to the 360 without Japan. In others the PS3 has gathered some steam but that I think will change come fall with Natal and price cuts/bundles.
It's just that simple.
