Bingo! I felt the same way when I played it. Its just isn't Final Fantasy. Exploring secret places not found on the world map where extremely hard monsters were hiding or where rare but powerful items were found. What made some of the past Final Fantasy's great was the character's didn't talk but now they sound like rejects who can't act.
