My best guess for having some buttons twice is tradition. 2x the shoulder buttons of the SNES controller, two analog sticks, two rumble thingies (hence Dualshock), six axis instead of just three.

Only one time Sony messed up and that was with teh Cell which has seven SPUs compared to the 360's three cores.

lol I hope you are joking, the cell only is better than any of the other processor's for this generation of consoles
