The DS version of DQ5 has an extra person to marry as well.

One thing I REALLY like about DQ5 is the commentary system. Your characters comment on everything in the game if you press them to; and it is different depending on who is in your party, which makes for this game worth playing at least 3 times (Chrono Trigger is the only other game I can think of which had a system which truly encouraged players to do that). DQ8 had a similar system, but it worked no where near as well as DQ5's - it was more of a hassle than a welcomed feature in DQ8 with the way it was implemented.

Well in Dragon Quest VIII, it was used more of a 'ask for help' feature when you got lost or wanted to know about a town, etc.  It was still interesting to do as the characters were somewhat dry without doing it (especially Jessica and Angelo).

The DS games are just much better because they added the party chat feature.  Sadly, they cut this feature out of the western release of Dragon Quest IV (along with a lot of other things).  Either due to lazyness or incompetence, we shall never know.
