Well it means it beat Avatar. That's quite an achievement.

It beat Avatar at a relatively meaningless achievement. Hell, Spiderman-3 had a higher opening weekend, and by the end of Avatar's lifetime, will only have grossed a third as much.

The release date of Avatar (December 18) was better than Alice's one (March 5).

And Spider-Man 3 had a bigger budget for advertisment.

 

And it's also a big achievement for Tim Burton since a lot of his movies are kind of niche (aka not blockbusters).

His opening gross average is $38,851,116.
