The first was better. Disgaea 3s battle maps seem kinda awkward, like sometimes you have to walk a whole lot to get to the bad guys. Which means I found it easier just to lug around main character + cleric.

That's the problem with the game still imo, you can just play the entire game with no strategy and one character, aside a few block puzzles in fights that is.

Well, there's not a whole lot of strategy to the games if you powerlevel. Hell, I've done it myself in the first two games (using only the main character in both as my only fighter). I think the whole strategy idea stems from the fact that battles played at an appropriate level will most likely present some kind of challenge.

Well yeah, you can get a strategic challenge out of it, but you really do have to force it out. You have to underlevel your party, basically. Because the AI of course is never as intelligent as your own, in fact they do not even take there turns unless they are within range to attack which means you can very easily pick them off one by one.

I'm not saying it's not fun though. I have all 3 of 'em, although only finished the 1st since my HDD died and I lost my D3 save data before the end, and STILL find myself waiting for the EU trophy patch and incentive to start up again, but in the end the game would be a whole lot better with some pretty basic stuff.

a) better AI

b) PVP (with online HUB)

c) HD sprites and backgrounds

Overall as another installment in the Disgaea series I was NOT disapointed with the game, and enjoyed it as much as the 2nd or 1st, however with the difference in hardware I certainly was disapointed with the somewhat lacking technical quality. They claim this couldn't have been done on the PS2/PSP, but whatever they've added which apparantly demands so much more system resources certainly doesn't show through the gameplay. In the end D3 would have been AAA on the PSP, but ends up being relatively mediocre on the PS3, especially when I have it stacked up next to Valkyria Chronicles.
