Linearity is a good thing if you want your story to flow smoothly.

Some games need more linearity at points, so you remember what the main story is (Dragon Age is a good example for this, in the middle I completely forgot about the Darkspawn until I random fought a group of them on the road).

Free roaming is good, but it needs a bit of MAKE ME GO HERE woven in somewhere so I will never forget why/what my character are trying to accomplish.

@PS3 VS. 360 debate.  Who cares as long as you buy the game!  The games are what is important, not the console.
