I Think that right now developer's have made great progress in tapping the Hardware, but is in my Opinion there is still plenty of room on both platform's to grow and mature.
that 3 or 4 or even 5 year's is not enough time to get the best that this Hardware is capable of.
there is still much needed experience and practice with this Hardware to prepair the Developer's for next generation system's.
From this generation going forward, Multi-Core development is going to be the standard for game development.
and not just Game's software in general, I think for Cloud and Grid computing, many developer's are going to need as much experience they can muster , because this is one of those thing's every 10 year's or so in computing that changes some aspect of Computing in general, because of how the Hardware an Software connect's not just on a level like home based computing, but since Network computing has become more robust since the past couple of year's with cloud and Grid , many developer's still need the experience to add this under their belt of skill's that will no doubt be needed more in the future. THIS just give's you more practice.
