I don't see how that's possible. Hanging involves a piece of rope, a wooden structure and a trapdoor. Life imprisonment involves ~40 years of food, healthcare, etc.

The death penalty is FAR more expensive, it can cost the state close to a million dollars to have ONE man put to death. As opposed to 30-60k a year for twenty five to life.
