I'd argue that yes, they are.

Chrono Trigger NEVER made a claim to be any more than it was. Ex: Crono is a just a good kid and he succeeds in his role in the game.

Chrono Cross? Serge is swirled around and the central focal point by being mediator and his father has repeatedly tried to damn him due to this and other events spiraling out of control. How does he feel? "...".

Serge is a failure, Crono wasn't until Cross was introduced and ruined everything by behing the worst game ever created in human history, selling poorly, and helping in Square's fall into a merger.

Seriously dude.  You really should just give up.  You have no points.  All your 'argument' boils down to is 'the game is the worst game ever made' and 'the game has a terrible plot'.  Which others have already stated, there's more to a game than just one thing (IE: the plot).  If 'the plot' was the only thing that you counted towards a game, I could name MANY worse games than Chrono Cross, including some Final Fantasy games.

That aside, as I said in my previous post, there's many other redeeming (and genuinely great) things about Chrono Cross.  But you just seem so blinded by your hatred of this game (and fixated by one thing: the plot) that you can't see it.  So either look at the big picture or drop it.

And for everyones info, both Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger were written and developed by the same group of people.  The same plot writers.  The same core development staff (plus many additional people than Chrono Trigger got).  The same producers.  Etc.  The only thing that was different this time around was the concept behind the game.  Originally, the concept behind the game was a team up behind Sugiyama of Final Fantasy fame and the Dragon Quest team (Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama) to quote: 'Make a game in the world of Akira Toriyama'.  There was no big grand scheme to make an epic storyline and no grand blueprint to make a series.   So the only people who weren't involved with Chrono Cross' Development were the original games executive producers (Sakaguchi/Yuji Horii) and Akira Toriyama.  And I doubt many people want to admit that Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama of Dragon Quest fame was a greater part of the reason that Chrono Trigger was so good (though in my opinion, that is why).

So all you people chastising Chrono Cross for 'ruining' Chrono Trigger, you need to understand, Chrono Trigger was a one time thing.  Like if Nintendo teamed up with Sega to make a Mario/Sonic game or Bioware teamed up with Bethesda to create some crazy MMO.  Chrono Trigger was amazing, but you don't have to hate a game (Chrono Cross) to like another (Chrono Trigger).

1.) The original story writer of Chrono Trigger, Yuji Horii, was not part of Chrono Cross's development. Masato Kato stated he just wrote more details to Horii's story and that the ONLY original work of his in Chrono Trigger was Zeal. Horii, however, wrote the events himself. Kato merely filled the details behind them.

2.) If Chrono Cross was it's own original game, or was suppose to be taken as such, then why did they even bother with Chrono Trigger connections? What was the point? If they were confident in their product why even have a Chrono title? Answer: Chrono Cross was made solely for cashing in on Chrono Trigger's good name.

3.) http://totalplaystation.com/ps2/final-fantasy-xii/news/1045/

Co-developer and Producer of Chrono Cross, Tanaka, speaking of behalf of Chrono Cross and Square Enix to explain it better: Chrono Cross is not a sequel to Chrono Trigger

Lastly,

4.) And I'm speaking like a nerdraging jerk because I have crazy hate for Chrono Cross that I will never let go because the first dungeon kept freezing on my on my ps1 and ps2 when I tried playing it and then I had to play it on the ps3 just to get through the first dungeon because it's the only way I could move past that part and during the time the ps3 firmware wasn't updated enough so "elements" in Chrono Cross wouldn't freeze the game.

The plot though is honestly the worst plot I've ever come upon. Yes, even worse than FF4 which was a star wars rip off combined with too much jumping of conclusions, imo.
