Well there you go

Even in FF7, the 1st Disc was pretty straightfoward with only a couple side things. It opened up in Disc 2, but even then things like the Golden Saucer and Chocobo Farming didn't reach full potential to Disc 3.

I think this issue of it being too linear is overblown.
