Synching trophies, why?

I myself do not own a PS3, but I have been very curious as to why there is a need for trophy synching as well. I've had a buddy who has had more than one error related to playing a game and he always blames it on the "trophy sync" error yet never elaborates. It would be nice to see sony clean that up.
