Retail games will (almost) always be cheaper than downloadable equivalents, the cost to manufacture and ship the discs is fairly insignificant, and on consoles at least one company has a monopoly on all downloadable sales. As for why it's cheaper on the Iphone, it's a completely different market there - different customers and different competing games - if you want to make money on the app store you need a cheap price
So the reason for all 3 of these is that complex mathematical calculations determined that this would maximise the profit for the relevant companies.

Sucks though... |
Doesn't really hold true when you look at DD for PC games, though. Games are almost invariable a decent amount cheaper than their boxed counterparts on Steam, and I'd imagine this is the same for other services as well.

Steam's monopoly is completely different to the monopolies held by WW,PSN,XBLA. Steam has a fairly decent market share, PSN has 100%. It is possible for publishers to digitally distribute their games on the PC without steam. It is NOT possible for this on PSN. If Steam has high prices, a better dl service will appear.
