Piracy is bad obviously for the company, but for gaming, specifically the PC it is hurting the customers and pirates as well. Fewer and fewer good games are getting released for the PC and when they are they have wacky security measures that make the experience unenjoyable and this is because the people that play video games are very likely to know how to pirate. Music releases won't really aren't that affected because making an album is no where near as expensive as making a video game and so its almost guaranteed profit, and movies make a large portion of their money from the boxoffice and have a broad audience, many of which wouldn't know about piracy.
I predict as it gets easier and easier to pirate games on the PC, PC gaming will become nonexistent except for subscription based games simply because there is no money to be made. And yes pirates download a lot more games then they would buy, but its bull that any game someone pirates would not have been bought otherwise. I guarantee games like ME2, LFD2, and others would have had twice the PC sales if piracy was nonexistent.
