Maybe... When something serious happens to hardware and multiple people are effected at once, on the same day no less there is every likelihood this will have some effect on their hardware sales and perhaps their software sales in the short term if people are unable to use their PS3s properly.
The longer this goes on the worse it is for them because more systems will be effected. Its quite likely the retail sales people being enthusiasts would have suffered from this error as they'd probably have older systems. If multiple people in the same store experience a fault on the same day you can bet people who are in store to buy one will hear about it. Noone except people following this directly will know that its just the phat units being effected.
