28,000 is more than enough to make a decent living starting out. A ton of people make a hell of a lot less than that and do ok. Hell I make less then half that atm (working part time while in school) and me and my room mate are just fine.

28K may seem good now, but after school you will realize that anything below about 75K won't provide a decent standard of living.  Closer to twice that if you live in an expensive city.

there is almost nowhere in the us that 75k wouldn't give you a decent standard of living.  In North Dakota here you'd be very well off.  I make 45k a year, after taxes it is a little over $3000 a month, i have $300 on rent and another $300 on food, $30 for electricity, about $100 for health care, i suppose around $50 for gas and $30 for car insurance, another $25 for my cell phone.  That's only $835 in expenses, anything else is extra and of course i do buy many extra things.  With over $2000 every month in free money there is certainly no issue.  If i had kids or was married it would cost more but i would also get huge tax cuts unless my wife was making good money too.
