Reading this report really made me think... I actually wondered what I'd do if a hated rival of mine (not that I have any presently, but just bear with me here) was in mortal danger, and I was in a position to save his/her life... I thought about it, and decided I would save him/her, but (s)he might not be so noble... Which led me to reflect on Machiavellian philosophy, and I found a major chink in said philosophy: it relies on humanity's inbred paranoia, and does not allow for the possibility that man can rise above said paranoia... But I'm sure that many philosophers are already aware of this very thing...
