Hi everyone, I'm from Chile...and fuck, it was quite awful.
Now, I imagine most people dont know that Chile has a rich history of eartquakes and volcanoes (anyone remember the eruption in Chaiten, couple years ago?, there were some pictures of a lightning storm in the smoke clouds from the volcano, quite amazing). Unfortunately, this will always be the case, being close to the Nazca plaque, and right besides the Andes cord.
But, for that reason, in general the constructions here are made to stand a big quake, so the death toll usually is very low compared to similar earthquakes in other places.
Luckily, most of the people I've communicated (family, friends,gf) are fine, and so are their homes.
