I think that the people that said Sony was crazy are crazy.

When did they announce the shipment though, for some reason I seem to think it was before the Slim and price cut was announced.

it was... and most people said

"they're crazy!!! .. unless they have a big price cut and maybe a slim coming"

oh look... thats exactly what happened.

selective memory from the OP and other posters here.

So if I go back, because I remember that news story, I will find these words.

I remember the words impossible used many times even after the Slim was released. Let me go to some digging.

We all said Sony was crazy.

I didn't think they were crazy. I just took it as fact that SCE had a hardware revision with reduced production costs that would allow them to sell it at $299.

As for predictions on how well a $299 PS3 would sell 6 months ago, that's a lot more subjective. Some, mostly going off their emotional hopes, predicted that a $299 price point wouldn't change anything in terms of demand. Not true. There's always going to be a bigger pool of consumers for a viable (one that's not for selective markets or lacking software support) $299 console vs. the same console at $399, which is not a mass consumer friendly price (neither is $299, but it's obtainable for most who prioritize AV/game equipment for entertainment).

And just to toss a hat in the ring, for those who don't think a $199 price point won't change the demand (and SCE annual sales projections) for the PS3 in another year or two (not making any guesses as to when; it happens when SCE can slash production costs low enough), I'm saying right now, it will.
