I think Gordon Freeman is a great idea for a character... they just forgot to include any character. He never says anything, you only get to see his face in still images on the occasional loading screen, he doesn't have any clear goals of his own or personality quirks. He's a scientist who never, ever does anything scientifical.

Nobody is glad to see Gordon because he can fix their trans-dimensional discombobulator. They're glad to see Gordon because they can hand him a crowbar and he will beat the headcrabs to death so they don't have to. The physicist hero could be replaced by a well-trained gorilla.

yes, this guy could be the lamest character in videogames history, particularly compared to the success of the games from which he is the main hero
