The i7 920 with the current DO stepping is actually a monstrous overclocker breaking 4Ghz on air with stock voltage (many lots can actually be undervolted and break 4Ghz). But, just about any decent current CPU should easily overclock fast enough (or beyond) for practical use with current games. Pretty much all of the 1156 based CPUs fall into this category. Since their debut, there really hasn't been any point in building a 1336 based system for games.
Despite the huge difference in overall processing power currently available, some of the best gaming rigs still use highly overclocked E8400-8600 core 2 duos.
