All PS3 games comes with firmware on the disk. If your firmware is old, it will force you to install it.

I've never noticed one except when there is a GAME update and it forces you to update that or if it finds a system update online it will make you install it... but I never knew it was ON the disc.

Yes, I have noticed it right after I bought new PS3 and inserted fresh copy of GTA4 into it. It have installed latest firmware from the disk. I belive it is true for ALL games. This is actually makes sense, since developers do not need to test their games on older firmwares and can be sure that all features they are using are included on gamer system. Keep in mind there are plenty of offline PS3 users out there.

You do not need to install games updates if you do not want to and not planning to play online with it, you can always skip this part. You also not forced to install online updates unless you are planning to log into PSN ;)
