Either way, you have to keep mixing things up or it'll get stale.   My concern, perhaps unjustified, is they are relying too heavily on novelty and not making an overall entertaining game.   But we'll see one the reviews start coming in.

I don't see that at all. My problem with most brawlers, is that while they continually add variety and flash, the underlying gameplay isn't much fun in the first place. The underlying mechanics of Red Steel 2 are fun in themselves, and there's no reason why it should hold the game back from having variety at the same time. And if you look through the videos we've seen so far, we've seen plenty of different kinds of enemies. Various different early goons with different weapons and styles, then there are ninjas which once again vary, and there are bosses, and that's just the limited stuff we've seen so far. There's no reason to think this is going to end up like No More Heroes where you just trudge through the same goons over and over, though even if it somehow did the underlying gameplay would still make it more fun.

I agree with this.  I don't like brawlers (no not even God of War) because I find the button mashing mundane.  Yes, yes, I know, I've played God of War, it still bored me.    The base gameplay should be more fun, but if this ends up like a brawler, even a good one, I still won't care for it.
