Well HD-DVD was actually much more capable than blu ray when it came to "extra" content. It could even access online extra content.


Technically HD DVD was inferior to Blu-Ray in any sense. Less storage, lower bitrate, not as scratch resistant, etc.

The software for either format could be upgraded through firmware updates. Blu-Ray also allows for online content and features, holds more space for extras and will soon also support stereoscopic 3D.
