Was that import Espgaluda II Black Label by any chance? I was dying to know quite awhile now if it was region-free and it seems like that has been answered: http://kotaku.com/5471899/if-you-want-to-play-espgaluda-ii-read-this-post Regular edition is region-free, but the limited edition (comes with game themed faceplate and alternative cover art) is region-locked.
I'm not gonna get it right away just to make sure 100% that it is indeed region-free (checking what the guinea pigs say on the forums. lol). But it appears that it will be. And the regular edition comes with a soundtrack CD too. Nice.
Cave is awesome. They make great (but hard. lol) shmups and they are probably the most Pro-Xbox Japanese developer out there. And they treat their overseas fans well (Futari is region-free, this is region-free, DeathSmiles is getting localized).
It's a great thing that DeathSmiles is being localized because Cave charges quite a premium for these games in Japan. Aksys will probably charge $40 tops for DeathSmiles (half Japanese price) because they know that a $60 shmup isn't going to fly very well with the western audience.
