the only people who want the ps3 controller changed is owners of other consoles (xbox 360/wii) or platform (pc). the playstation controller design is the soul of the playstation brand. me my brother and others grew up with the playstation we mastered and memorized the controller layout and know how to use it wisely in any game genre situation.  the playstation controller is also very hand friendly i dont understand how it wouldnt be for any and size (from experience). i was 6 when i got a playstation (obviously my hands were small) and didnt  have a problem with it. my brother mastered tekken 1 and he was 9 at the time (also let me point out he's a beast in the street fighter and tekken series) and now we're are both in our 20's and we still dont have a problem with it. im also a frequent shooter fan and prefer to play shooters on the ps3 and my god i can own anyone using the ps3 controllers (i love owning cheating xbox 360 users who made the transition to the ps3 with the dualshock). the controller is fine and it's not going to change

That's kind of oversimplification - I've owned every Sony system except for the PSP.

The controller is not the soul of the brand - the soul of the brand has more to do with the image and the developer environment that ws embodied by the first two Playstations, though that's changed to som degree with the PS3.

The DS2 and DS3 are not optimal in that the control sticks, while placed symmetrically, are not placed optimally for use - the D-pad is where the left thumbstick should be, which is to say where the thumb naturally rests when gripping the controller. Switching those two inputs alone would improve the feel of the controller immensely - and, yes, make it like the 360 or the Gamecube pads, but that's not the point so much as ergonomics is. Having the D-pad in the primary position was fine in the 90's when most Playstation games didn't use analogue controls, but nowadays it's archaic for the sake of being archaic - or, worse, archaic for the sake of pleasing fans who refuse to accept change in the controller.

The grips could probably stand to be improved, too, tough that might require a shifting of the entire face of the controller. I'd have to thin about that a while.

the controller is the soul. the software change and the hardware change over the generations but not the controller design. if the ps1 controller was a piece of sh** during the ps1 life-time the console would of been dismissed by a lot of people or sony would of changed it through the ps2/ps3 cycle. obviosuly those who are complaining are a low percent of the userbase as well as other console owners sony wont cater to because the playstation is not the 360, wii, or the pc. let me also bring up that i owned other consoles and never had a problem going between them.

i and others play shooters using the ps3 controller and we dont suck (and we are life-long playstation supporters) the control is design perfectly for shooters so who would sony listen to? the 90% of people who love it or the low 10% who dont? i have no problem going between the d-pad (for skills or other uses) and the left analog stick (for movement) maybe it's just you. frankly it takes more skill on the ps3 than 360 considering 70% cheat on the 360.

my brother and others (me sometimes) play fighting games on the ps3 and dont suck and love the controller (some are even saying tekken wont work on the  360 because of the controller change)

me, my brothers, and others play rpgs using the ps3 cotroller and we have no problem with it.

i love playing racing games using the ps3 controller (i think the playstation controller is the best for racing)

so please even though i understand your frustration there's nothing wrong with the controller and dont try to change it to someone elses controller design because the playstation isnt other consoles.

P.S by the description you gave by where the buttons should be place you described the Ms xbox 360 controller... THIS IS NOT THE 360 IT'S THE PLAYSTATION
