That's kind of oversimplification - I've owned every Sony system except for the PSP.
The controller is not the soul of the brand - the soul of the brand has more to do with the image and the developer environment that ws embodied by the first two Playstations, though that's changed to som degree with the PS3.
The DS2 and DS3 are not optimal in that the control sticks, while placed symmetrically, are not placed optimally for use - the D-pad is where the left thumbstick should be, which is to say where the thumb naturally rests when gripping the controller. Switching those two inputs alone would improve the feel of the controller immensely - and, yes, make it like the 360 or the Gamecube pads, but that's not the point so much as ergonomics is. Having the D-pad in the primary position was fine in the 90's when most Playstation games didn't use analogue controls, but nowadays it's archaic for the sake of being archaic - or, worse, archaic for the sake of pleasing fans who refuse to accept change in the controller.
The grips could probably stand to be improved, too, tough that might require a shifting of the entire face of the controller. I'd have to thin about that a while.
